Between the ages of eight and 16, a girl is typically too old to be a flower girl and too young to be a bridesmaid; therefore, she can be a junior bridesmaid.
At this particular age, girls tend to enjoy being involved in wedding planning and feel lucky to be part of such a special occasion. From performing various tasks and duties to picking out her junior bridesmaid's attire, junior bridesmaids play a significant role throughout the wedding.
Duties and Responsibilities
When trying to establish a junior bridesmaid’s duties and responsibilities, it is important to consider the girl’s personality and involve her in important wedding details. In the end, it may make her feel closer to the bride.
Though the junior bridesmaid's role may not be as considerable as a bridesmaid's, she may still be expected to perform a variety of important duties, some of which are similar to those of a flower girl. How the junior bridesmaid is included in the wedding is completely up to the bride and groom; they may choose to have her perform basic duties, or may wish for her to help with other duties, as well. For example, though she would not be expected to throw the wedding shower, she may be expected to help with the planning and decorating.
Depending on the nature of the party and how appropriate it would be for a younger girl, a junior bridesmaid may sometimes attend the bachelorette party. She also may perform various duties at the actual ceremony, such as passing out programs and greeting people before the wedding.
A junior bridesmaid is responsible for performing the traditional bridesmaid duties, as well. For example, a junior bridesmaid is expected to attend the rehearsal along with the rest of the bridal party. Most of the time, her parents also will be invited to attend the dinner. Also, as part of the processional, a junior bridesmaid may walk down the aisle with or without an escort, preceded by the bridesmaids. During the actual ceremony, she will remain with the rest of the bridal party.
A Junior Bridesmaid's Attire
Though the junior bridesmaid's attire greatly depends on what the bride prefers, the junior bridesmaid is too old to wear a traditional flower girl dress and is too young to wear the typical bridesmaid dress. Therefore, it is important to find a dress to suit her age, as well as the style of the wedding.
Of course, the junior bridesmaid's attire may be similar to the bridesmaid' dresses. However, her attire should always be modest enough to suit her age. For example, if the bridesmaids' dresses are strapless, the junior bridesmaid's attire should be similar, but with one or more straps added. Sometimes, the junior bridesmaid's attire may be similar in style, but different in color than the other bridesmaids' dresses. Unless the junior bridesmaid is an older teen, low-heeled (or no heel) shoes are usually preferred. As a finishing touch to a junior bridesmaid's attire, a bride may have her junior bridesmaid carry kissing balls matching the other bouquets or a smaller version of her own bouquet.
Note: Before any attire is purchased, it should be pre-approved by the bride herself.
